INROCUCING WINDOWS XP (CCC Study Material)

Basically, the operating system is a collection of programs. These programs first translate your instruction or questions into computer languages or machine language. And then, they translate the computer’s response to your queries from the computer languages into English. Thus, an operating system may be defined as a program that instructs your PC how to work with its various components. Currently, four operating system- Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows me, Windows XP, Vista, Window 7, and Window 7.1 are available in the market.

WINDOWS XP REQUIREMENTS (CCC Study Material in English)

Windows XP is quite popular these days. This chapter concentrates on teaching you its basics and use. Before installing any operating system, you will require some essential hardware components. These ae as listed below:
  • A minimum of 64 MB of RAM, althouth 128 MB is much preferred. XP can handle a maximum of 4 GB RAM;
  • 233 megahertz (MHz) Pentium or equivalent microprocessor;
  • A 2 GB or larger hard disk with at least 650 MB free space available;
  • VGA monitor;
  • Keyboard;
  • Mouse or compatible pointing device;
  • CD- ROM or DVD drive.

 Components of a Window (DOEACC CCC Study Material)

Each window of Windows Me and Window XP has   some similar basic component. Current your desktop displays two Windows viz. my Computer and Local Disk (C:) or (C:). Depending on the version of Windows, the corresponding figure for your desktop would be fig. 1 if you are using Windows XP or if your version is Windows ME. IN both these figures, we have opened the Local Disk (C:) by following the steps described above. Fig. 1

                Box displaying contents: In ail the windows displayed in the last section, you must have observed a bigger box displaying smaller icons. These icons represent the contents of that particular window.            Tills bar: the topmost portion of any window in Windows Xr is called die Title bar. This bar displays the name of the window on the left-hand side. For example, displays the names of the Locai Bisk (C:) And My computer windows on the left-hand side. Also displays these names on the left-hand side. On the right-hand side, the Title bar displays three buttons viz. the minimize, the minimize and the close buttons. The function of each of these buttons is as follows:
  1. a) The Minimize button is used to reduce a window into a button.
  2. b) The Maximize button Is used to enlarge a window to cover the entire screen.
  3. c) The Close button is used to close a window.
If you open many windows in ”Windows XP at a time, only the window which was opened last remains active and its title bar appears highlighted. So a currently active window is the one which is opened last. You can open any number of windows, but only the window opened last would be currently active. Now, to have a better understanding of the concept of an active window, let us undertake the following exercise:
  1. Double-Click on the My Computer icon on the desktop to open it. Now Double-Click the Local Disk to open it.
  2. Click on the Restore button in the Title bar of the Local Disk (C:) window to reduce the Local Disk (C:) into a small window on the desktop.
  3. Click on he left mouse-button over My Computer window. Instantly, the My Computer window gets displayed over Local Disk (C:) window.
  4. To see the Title bar of the Local Disk (C:) window clearly, move the mouse-pointer over the Title bar of the Title bar of the My Computer window .
  5. Press the left mouse-button
  6. Keeping the left mouse-button pressed, drag the mouse a little downwards and release the left button.
You can clearly see the Title bar of the Local Disk (C:) Window. The Title bar of the My Computer window appears more highlighted than that of the Local Disk (C:) window in ”Windows XP. Fig. 3 shows the Local Disk (C:) window and the My Computer window of Windows XP. Fig. 3

              Menu bar: Every options are used to perform specific operations . for example, the File option is used for carrying out file-related operations, the Edit option is used for editing purpose, the View option is used for changing the appearance of a window, and the Help option provides help in case of problems. Later on, we will learn how to work with these options. Fig. 4

Menu bar Options (NIELIT CCC Study Material in English)

let us now work with some Menu bar options. The File menu bar option provides you the facility of file searching. Assuming that the My Computer window is opened, and the Local (C:) option is selected, we will undertake a search operation as follows :
  1. Click on the folder where you wish to search.
  2. Click on the Fits menu in the menu bar option. Instantly,  a pull- down menu gets displayed on the screen.
  3. Inside the pull-down menu, move the mouse-pointer over the Search option and click the left mouse-button. Immediately, a Search Results box gets displayed on the screen.

The Search Results dialog box helps us to search us to search for particular files in a folder. Here you must have noticed that this box has a search companion on left side., which helps you to search. For searching the desired files or folders, click on the All Files and Folders option.
  1. Let us now search for ail rhe jpg files in our system. To do so. Click inside the box beside the All or part of the Fife name option present in the Search Com-panion section.
  2. Now type *.jpg
  3. To start the search procedure, click on the Search button present inside the Search Companion section. Instantly, the system searches for all the files with the *.jpg exten-sion and sub- sequentiy displays them on the right hand side of Search Re-sults box.
  4. To close the Search Results box now. Click on the close button present on its title bar.

The Edit menu bar option provides the facility to directly copy/move the folder or files and paste them at any desired location. This may be done as follows:
  1. Let us copy a sub-folder, say New Folder to any other folder, say My Pictures. To do so, first double-click on the folder My Documents to open it.
  2. Click on the folder Mew Folder to highlight it.
  3. Once the folder is highlighted, click on the Edit menu Bar option. This displays a pull-down menu.
  4. Inside the pull-down menu, click on the Copy to Folder option Instantly the Copy Items box appears on the screen.
  5. Now, click on the plus sign besides the My Documents icon displayed inside the box, the contents of the My Documents folder are displayed in the box window.
  6. Click on the My Pictures folder.
  7. Finally, click on the copy button. The New Folder gets copied in the My Pictures folder.
  8. Double- click on the My documents folder Inside the Local Disk window and then double-click on the My Pictures Folder. Not that a copy of the folder appears in the My pictures folders.
The view menu in Windows XP contains additional view features to enhance your display. This the view menu, carryout the following steps:
  1. Click on the View menu in the menu bar of the Local Disk (C:) window Instantly, a menu displaying the various options for changing the display appears.
  2. In this menu, click on the Thumbnails option. This immediately displays the thumbnails of the files and folders in the Local Disk (C:) folder.

3. Now change the headings, such as Name, Size, lype, Modified, etc. To do so, click on the View menu. As pull-down menu appears. 4. Click on the Choose Details option of this menu. This instantly displays a Choose Details box. 5. Here the currently displayed details are shown as selected [with a tick sign right)]- The Name option-is selected in this box by default. We have selected size, Type, Date, Modified. In order to deselect any one column item, click again on the tick sign adjacent to the detail name. if you want to select yet another detail from the ones available in the, Choose Details, move the mouse- pointer inside the box beside the detail name ana click the left mouse-button. A tick is displayed in the box which confirms its selection. 6. Finally, click on the OK button to see the selected detail in the window which in our case is the Local Disk (C:) window. Status bar: The Status bar of any window in Windows XP displays information such as the total number of items present inside the window, the total memory space occupied by the items and the name of window which in our case is My Computer. Now as you have become familiar with the components of a window, let us try to understand the third common mouse-action i.e. dragging. Dragging: Moving the mouse on your mbuse-pad in any direction while keeping the left mouse-button pressed is called dragging. While dragging, make sure that the mouse remains in contact with the mouse-pad all the time. The dragging action is used to move icons, windows, etc. At present, the Desktop of Windows XP displays two windows, viz. the My Computer window and the Local Disk (C:) window. Let us now learn how to drag any window- say the My Computer window-from one position to another on the Desktop. Dragging the My Computer window in Window XP: To drag the My Computer window across the Desktop, you will need to undertake the following steps: Steps
  1. Move the mouse over the mouse-pad so that the mouse-pointer gets placed over the Title bar of the My Computer window.
  2. Press the left mouse-button.
  3. Keeping the left mouse-button pressed, move the mouse to your right on the mouse-pad.
  4. You will notice that the My Computer the Local Disk  window present on the Window XP Desktop. But before doing so, the Local Bisk window needs to be converted into an active window.
Making the Local Disk (C:) window an active window: As you can notice, the Ticie bar of the Local Disk (C:) window is not highlighted. This is because it is not an active window. The following steps may be undertaken to make the Local Disk (C:) window active:
  1. Move the mouse -pointer over the Title bar of the Local Disk (C;=window.                               2
  2. Press the left mouse-button just once and release it. You will observe that the Title bar of the Local Disk (C:) window gets highlighted and is displayed over the Sly Computer window. You can now drag this window if you want.
Now you must have become familiar with the dragging of a window. Apart from dragging windows, we can also drag icons. Dragging an icon on the Desktop is also quite easy. The Desktop of Windows XP, at the moment, is covered by two windows; the Local Disk (C:) and My Computer. Therefore, before doing the to close the Local Disk (0:) window, undertake the following steps:
  1. Move the mouse-pointer over the Title bar of Local Disk (C:) window.
  2. Move the mouse-pointer a little to the right on the mouse-pad so that it gets placed over the Close button (x) of the Local Bisk (C:) window.
  3. Finally, press the left mouse-button once and release it. You will hear a tick sound as the Local Disk (C:) window closes. This turns the My Computer window into an active window and its Title bar gets highlighted. Let us now close the active window My Computer, present on the Desktop of Widow XP. To do so, perform the following steps:
  4. move the mouse over the mouse-pad in such a way that the mouse-pointer gets placed over the Title bar of the My Computer window.
  5. Now move the mouse a little towards your right side on the mouse-pad so that the mouse-pointer gets placed over the Close button.
  6. finally, press the left mouse-button once, and release it. Instantly, the My Computer window disappears from your Desktop.
DRAGGING Icon on the Desktop: Now that the Desktop area of Window XP is vacant, you can drag any of its icons. Let us try dragging New Folder icon on the Windows XP Desktop. To do so, undertake the following:
  1. Move the mouse so that the mouse-pointer gets placed over the New Folder icon.
  2. Press the left mouse-button and keeping it pressed, move the mouse towards your rightside on the mouse-pad. You will ob-serve that a grayish shadow of the icon moves on the screen along  with the pointer.
  3. Release the left mouse-button. As soon as you release it, you will see that the icon moves on to a new location on the Desktop.

Quitting Windows XP (CCC Study Material in English)

The following steps are done to quit the Window XP:
  1. Place the mouse-pointer on the start button of the Taskbar, and then press the left mouse-button. Immediately a push-up menu appears.
  2. Inside the push-up menu, move the move the mouse-pointer over the Turn Off Computer option.
  3. Now, press the left mouse-button. Immediately, a turn Off Computer box gets displayed.
  4. Inside the Turn Off computer box, click on the Turn Off option.
  5. After a few seconds, a screen, displaying the message, It is now safe turn off your computer appears. Once this message appears. You can now switch off your computer.
