STARTING WINDOWS XP (CCC Study Material)

The Desktop of windows XP displays many icons. Each icon represents a program. These icons can be opened by double-clicking over them. On double clicking an icon, a window appears which displays the contents of the program represented by that icon. For example, when you double-click on the My Computer icon, it opens up into a window displaying its contents in the form of icons. Double-clicking on any of the icons representing the contents further opens into their respective windows.

Getting Familiar with the Desktop (CCC Study Material in English)

                As soon as you switch on your computer, your computer, your system gets booted. Finally, windows XP desktop gets displayed before you.
  • The My Computer icon lets you view the files, folders, drives and other tools in your system.
  • The Recycle Bin icon lets you store deleted files and recover them later, if required.

Opening an Icon from the Desktop (DOEACC CCC Study Material)

Now we will try opening the My Computer icon from the Desktop. To do so, perform the following steps:
  1. Move the mouse on the mouse-pad so that the mouse-pointer gets positioned over the My Computer icon.
  2. After positioning the mouse-pointer over the My computer icon double-click the left mouse-button. Instantly, the My Computer icon opens into a window. This window displays several icons which represent the disk drive buttons and other important tools.

Starting a Program (NIELIT CCC Study Material)

                You can start any program by using the Start buttons. This buttons is present on the extreme left corner of the Task bar. When you click on the Start button, a push-up menu appears. Providing at list of options you can work in. Now click the all programs and another programmers will display, choose any program and program. To do so, undertake the following steps: Fig. 7

  1. Place the mouse-pointer over the Start button present on the Taskbar and click the left mouse button. A push -up menu appears on the screen on the screen. This menu displays several options, such as log off, turn off compute Run, Help and Support, search, setting, programs etc.
  2. To open the Notepad program, move the mouse upwards to place the cursor at programs option. instantly, a second menu gets displayed offering a few more options.
  3. Move the mouse pad so that the mouse-pointer gets placed on the Accessories opton tin the second menu. instantly, a third menu gets displayed before you.
  4. Now move the mouse a little to the right on the mouse-pad, so that the mouse-pointer gets placed over the third menu.
  5. Position the mouse-pointer downwards over the Notepad option of the third menu.
  6. Finally, press the left mouse-button just once. The Notepad program open into a window on the screen and gets displayed over the My Computer window.

Adjusting the Window Size Freely (NIELIT CCC Study Material in English)

                You can simultaneously open many windows on your desktop. You can also adjust the size of the windows so that you are able to work more easily with the contents of one program. A present the My Computer window is active on your Desktop. Now suppose you want to adjust the size of this window form the right side. For this, you have o undertake the following steps:
  1. Move the mouse-pointer to the right-hand side border of the My Computer The mouse-changes to a twin-headed arrow.
  2. Press the left mouse-button.
  3. Keeping the left mouse-button pressed, drag the mouse to the left-hand side.
  4. Keep dragging the mouse until the window is reduced to the required size.
  5. After reaching the desired size, released the left mouse-button. The window gets displayed in its new changed size.

Closing a Window NIELIT CCC Study Material in English PDF)

                Let us now learn the way to close the My Computer and the Notepad window. To do so, we will proceed as follow:
  1. Click on the My computer button present on the taskbar to make it the active window.
  2. Move the mouse-pointer over the close button on the extreme right corner of the Title bar of the My Computer
  3. Press the left mouse-button Instantly, the My Computer window closes and the Notepad window becomes visible on the screen.

Creating a Short-cut a Program (CCC Study Material 2018)

                In the topin Opening an Icon from the Desktop, you could easily open the My Computer icon because it was visible to you on your Desktop. A short-cut is basically a quick link to a program, a file or a folder that is located at a different place. You can create a short-cut icon on your Desktop, inside any folder or ever on the Start menu. Let us now create short-cut for the Notepad program through the following steps:
  1. Place the mouse-pointer anywhere in the free space of the Desktop of Windows XP and click the right mouse-button this instantly displays a menu.
  2. Now move the mouse-pointer over the New option inside this menu. The New option gets highlighted, and a second menu appears on the screen.
  3. Now in the second menu, move the mouse-pointer over the shortcut option and press the left mouse-button on it. The Create Shortcut box opens up on the screen.
  4. Move the mouse-pointer over the Browse button in this box, and click the left mouse-button. The Browse for folder box opens up on your Desktop.
  5. Move the mouse-pointer over the Plug sign beside the My Computer option and click the left mouse-button.
  6. Now move the mouse-pointer over the plug sign besides the Local disk (C:) option and click the left mouse-button.
  7. Move the mouse-pointer over the plug sign beside the Windows folder and click the left mouse-button.
  8. Move the mouse-pointer over the file named NOTEPAD and click the left mouse-button. The file is selected.
  9. Now move the mouse-pointer over the OK button in the Browse For Folder box, and click the left mouse-button. The Create shortcut box appears again.
  10. Move the mouse-pointer over the Next button of this box.
  11. Now press the left mouse-button once. Instantly, a box titled Select a Title for the program opens up on the screen.
  12. The select a Title for the Program box, displays a default name for the shortcut under the type a name for this shortcut option. To create a shortcut with the default name, click the Finish button.
  13. Finally, move the mouse-pointer over the Finish button, and click the let mouse button. The select a Title for the program box disappears and shortcut to Notepad program appears in the Desktop with a small arrow sign below it.
To open a short-cut icon of Notepad from the Desktop undertake the following steps:
  1. Place the mouse-pointer over the Notepad icon present on the Desktop.
  2. Double-click the mouse-button. The Notepad window instantly opens up on your screen.

Deleting the Shortcut Icon (NIELIT CCC Study Material in English)

                If you creating short-cut icons for a number of programs, your Desktop will soon get cluttered with icons. To make your Windows XP Desktop less crowded, it is advised that you delete some icons which are not required any more. Let us learn deleting shortcut icon by deleting the icon of the Notepad program on the Desktop. To do so, go through the following steps:
  1. Mover the mouse-pointer over the shortcut Notepad icon and click the left mouse-button just once. The icon gets highlighted.
  2. Press the Delete key on your keyboard. Instantly, a confirm File delete box appears on the screen.
  3. Now move the mouse pointer over the yes button iside the confirm file delete box. And press the left mouse-button on it.
Immediately, the icon disappears from the desktop, and the Recycle bin changes into a bin filled with papers. This means that the deleted icon is stored in the Recycle Bin and could be recovered. Deleting the Contents of the Recycle Bin                 When we delete a file, it is moved to the Recycle Bin. We can easily recover this file ad it is still there in the hard disk. However, you can delete this file permanently by deleting it form the Recycle Bin. You can empty the Recycle Bin by deleting all its contents. To do so, perform the following steps:
  1. Move the mouse-pointer over the Recycle Bin and click the right mouse-button Instantly, a menu gets displayed.
  2. In this menu, mover the mouse-pointer over the Empty Recycle Bin option and click the left mouse-button. Immediately, a Confirm File Delete box gets displayed. 27 asking you to confirm the deletion of the shortcut to Notepad.
  3. Click on the Yes button to confirm the file delete.
